Designing Meaningful Memorial Gardens: A Decade of Named Burial Sites in Bergen
How can memorial gardens be designed to support both remembrance and the needs of the bereaved? This was the topic of Johan Abrahamsson’s presentation at a seminar hosted by the Bergen Joint Parish Council, marking ten years of memorial gardens in Bergen.
The seminar brought together landscape architects, industry professionals, decision-makers, and other stakeholders at the House of Literature in Bergen to exchange knowledge and explore new ideas. Johan, who designed the recently completed memorial garden at Loddefjord Cemetery, took participants on a journey through inspiring examples from around the world, demonstrating how thoughtful landscape design can create places of dignity, reflection, and lasting remembrance.
The seminar formed part of the Bergen Joint Parish Council’s ten-year anniversary of memorial gardens in the city. The anniversary aimed to raise awareness of this form of burial, which is being chosen by an increasing number of people.
