Towards an elder-friendly society
Together with Local, Insam and the Center for Dignity, Curve Studio has prepared a feasibility study for how Rana municipality can be developed to better care for its aging citizens. Statistics Norway's projections indicate that Rana is facing an increasingly elderly population, well above the national average. Already in 2023, the proportion of elderly people over 65 was higher than the proportion of young people under 19. The municipality has therefore initiated extensive work to adapt its services to future need. Our team’s feasibility study is a key part of preparing the strategy for future health and care services.
The feasibility study focuses on the Ytteren district, just north of the city centre. We analyse how land and residential development can take place to contribute to an elder-friendly society in Rana over a 30 year period. An extensive participation process explored the overall strategy and a building project on a step-by-step basis. This informed a comprehensive plan for the long-term development of the building stock and outdoor areas. The study also takes a closer look at expected needs for competence and staffing in the future, and how the physical design can contribute to an appropriate use of personnel.
The proposals in the feasibility study include new facilities for nursing homes, residential centers and care homes as well as a mix of generation and student housing. An joint activity center unites the various parts of the program, and creates a new heart for the district. The entire facility is given a park-like design with different qualities of experience throughout the year. These green spaces bind the community on Ytteren together, creating a village community with good meeting places and plenty of opportunities for activity regardless of age and functional ability.
